Peloton Interactive Inc (PTON)

I get many readers ask me the question: "What do you mean when you say Value Stocks"? Then I refer them back to my favorite analogy. I have stuck in my head, from my youth, that candy bars should be $50c. When I travel the country and have to stop at a gas station, I WILL NOT buy candy unless it's $50c. I'm stubborn like that. I'll get the king size bar only if it's $1 dollar. A value stock is when you've done your homework and know what you think it should sell for like my Reese's cups. A value investor like myself tries (key word) to only buy when I see my Reese's cups (or a stock) AT or BELOW this level. Yes, go ahead and make fun of me but I'm principled in that way. I apply the same standard to stocks. I prefer to buy when I see it on sale and have a price in mind.

Don't believe me just watch moment: Go back and search for one of my best investments ever, Sprint. Sprint got "beat down" like they stole something, and I swooped in. When T-Mobile came calling, they offered a higher price to merge (as we say here "date" or "hook up" with) Sprint. It was truly a beautiful trade and we made lots of money.

I think Peloton is starting to shape up the same way my Sprint trade did. This stock was once as high as $150 just a year ago. To me, Peloton is just a bike but the stock skyrocketed once it came public. It has fallen from grace to a low of $22 dollars. Like the winter olympics, you don't want a stock chart that is sloping downhill...not good.

Rumor has it companies may be sliding into their DM trying to hookup. I bought some Peloton today because it reminds me of whenever I find Reese's cups for $50c. Usually, it's a time to load up because I just don't see if often. With Peloton, I still struggle with the need for an overpriced exercise bike. I will probably need to interview some actual users to fully understand all the benefits, but I said the same thing about the Apple iPhone and many people are happy with paying for an overpriced phone. I think there is definitely a market for the "connected" use of the bike but clearly, I didn't agree with the price of the stock. I finally feel somewhat vindicated, now that the stock has cratered but it took a while to get here. Long story short, is I can see clearly now the rain is gone. And I think Pelton is worth some risk if Amazon, Apple or other suitors wanna hookup.

Investing in Your Health

I miscalculated and dropped the ball on one of my most important pillars, the "Health" pillar. First is accountability, so I ultimately blame myself. I'll be honest, my calculation was I'm young...I can rip and run the mean streets of Corporate America and gracefully exit the rat race around the age of 35. I tell people in life there are always trade-offs and opportunity costs and I gambled that a former 3 sport H.S. athlete, gym rat, college recreation gym user, and even early adult life YMCA member would be able to stave off my "Corporate 15". That's my take on the Freshman 15 you gain in college. I travelled as a consultant for many years and our typical lifestyle was eating out daily and back to the hotel. Back then not every hotel had a gym and to make matters worse, we worked hard. I often traded relaxing, meditating, exercising for working, drinking, and eating out with coworkers. When I came home, I lived in a fancy apartment complex that had an indoor basketball court/gym, well populated exercise room, and an indoor movie theater. But I was rarely home. As a consultant I once got the designation of being a road warrior --- on the road for over a 100 days within the year.

Then came life in the office. Being a person a color, I adopted the model of getting into the office early and staying late. I was even chastised by fellow co-workers for delaying my participation in their weekly basketball games...I didn't want the boss to think I was a slacker. So I rarely left early but I participated to manage the image of me not wanting to be a team player. My solution I joined the weekly game but came into work early so I could leave on-time to make the games even though my peers rarely changed their schedules. Back then I lived by the office, which instead of being located in the great city of Chicago was out a good ways in the suburbs. Closer to some of the swankiest and highest priced zip codes in the Chicagoland area. This was another of those secrets we deal with in Corporate America. Many office parks are near where the well heeled live and rarely reside in the our city centers and hardly ever near communities of color. To put it in perspective, we had a good swatch of our workers who commuted from Wisconsin...yep you heard me right. But head down, work hard, I'm a team player and long trips to the city on the weekends to live it up or as my pals in the United Kingdom say to get some culture. My apartment had a room  sparsely populated with a machine or two and I wasn't much of an outside walker or runner. To hit my financial goals, I made a trade-off and didn't join the big gym clubs popular in the suburbs a little over a decade ago. I used the tiny workout room in my budget apartment and drove everywhere I went...classic suburban living.  But stop, who's to blame...ME. I am big on accountability and this is a good example of trade-offs and I needed more balance. Notice one thing that I didn't deploy in my toolkit that should have been...a "MINIMUM BASELINE". In cybersecurity we use this minimum baseline to set a security standard for all of the information systems under our control and by not consistently working out and getting annual physicals --- I didn't know my own baseline.

More to come on Investing in Your Health in Pt 2.

How to Buy Stocks

So knowing when to sell stocks OR anything in life is arguably the hardest thing to do. When should you sell your house, stocks, car?? The second hardest question to answer is how should I find stocks to buy. So let me take you back in the day, I used learned the following things when I first got started:

1) I read everything I could about Warren Buffett and realize to invest you need to know your investing personality. More to come on this but I often find your real life personality mirrors your investing.
High Risk/Reward personalities might like the flash of buying stocks like Ferrari (RACE), Tesla (TSLA), Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), or trading high flyers, day trading, and high risk high reward penny stocks.
Techy personalities may migrate to FAANG stocks. Facebook (FB), Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX), and Alphabet (GOOG) - parent company of Google...the G in FAANG.
Corporate personalities may like Ford (F), Goldman Sachs (GS), Procter & Gamble (PG), Microsoft (MS), Caterpillar (CAT) --- companies many of my peers wanted to work for when coming out school.
Cost Conscious personalities may migrate to companies meet analytical thresholds. We call that value investing. Sometimes the names are boring but they are steady and pay a dividend (which is the equivalent of getting a stimulus check every quarter): General Electric (GE), Real Estate Companies, Oil Companies, and Utilities like electric, cable, phone, and retail companies.
Loner personalities may gravitate to companies that don't get a lot of hype, quirky, are getting bullied, etc. What comes to mind here are clothing company Skechers (SKX), weed company Tilray, and Collectors Universe (CLCT) a collectibles company that grades things like baseball cards.  Then there a bullied companies (often for good reason) which fall out of favor on Wall Street for messing up:
Tesla - because Elon Musk was being targeted for his tweeting and 420 comments,
Lululemon - when their stock got beat up because their CEO appeared to mock curvy women
Gamestop - attacked by short sellers

I believe most people will gravitate to one or two categories. Take me for example, I resonated with Warren Buffett and have read tons of books and articles about the man. He comes across as a cost conscious value oriented guy and that defined me -- simple, no frills, no gimmicks, give me value type of style. But I also am a contrarian and tend to go against the crowd. So when I'm not looking for value stocks, I often look for reasons why the carbon industry was so against Tesla, redemption in Lululemon (after getting rid of their CEO), Gamestop providing a need for many communities that may not always have internet to download games, Disney and other retail companies getting beat down during COVID-19 lockdowns. I like the quintessential story of the getting knocked down and getting back up. That story of opportunity was my family's story. My father and mother, hard working immigrants, came to America worked some of the least flashy jobs but got it done. My father mocked for his West African accent and Ph.D degree and being told you're overqualified. I often look to where cancel culture strikes in the stock market and I bet that if at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again.

Prism - A look at African + African American Investing

1) Esusu - A company with African co-founders makes me proud:
Why I'm Watching:
I like to challenge myself. When I cut the cord, I lost the ability to watch CNBC. So I challenged myself to simply listen to the broadcast on Tune-In Radio. When I heard them announce a company called Esusu, my head turned. I had heard this termed used so many times in my African community. It means to pool money together and usually each week or so the group shares the pool money with one member. So it creates the lottery feeling of getting a big payment once every "x" month once it's finally your turn to receive the payout. Well I listened to Abbey Wemimo, co-founder of Esusu, talk about how he helped to start the firm. I even reached out on LinkedIn looking to connect and as an accredited investor I hope to invest and fund companies like his in the future.

2) The Coinbase Remix - How African-American Rappers and Athletes are Diversifying
Why I'm Reading:
For those of us that follow the markets, we were BLOWN away by the opening day value of Coinbase a digital exchange where you can buy, sell, and securely store cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. They became a public company recently and for us regular folk that is similar to baby being born. They were a private company and once they became public the baby popped out and but this baby was valued @ roughly $100 Billion dollars. So I know that many investors were dancing because they cashed in big time. Some of those investors I was proud to say were African-Americans like rapper Nas (Nasir Jones) who you all know I have in my Top 5 rappers of all time and National Basketball player Kevin Durant. Nas reported earned a $100 Million payout from this investment word on the street is KD cleaned up big time as well. I am happy to see these entertainers diversifying their investments...you will not rap and play ball forever. Very proud of these young brothers.

2014 - Themes Shaping My Investments (pt 1)

I want to capture the themes that I believe are shaping the world in 2014 and for the foreseeable future.  Game changing events shape people first, then entrepreneurs react, and finally investment dollars follow.  This is important for many people to remember in my opinion when looking back and asking why is the world changing right before my eyes and how can I participate. I've heard the phrase when life gives you lemonade...and changed it to when you and the world are buying or using a quality product think about investing in it.  I have a good friend that constantly talks to me about Whatsapp and if anyone close to me knows Apps are not my thing but I find out they were bragging about what would be a 19 Billion Dollar company I was just being introduced to.

Theme 1: E-Commerce

I write about this theme often and the verdict is in, many people prefer the comfort of buying things online. I know I do and a number of entrepreneurs have responded to become mega online retailers for everything imaginable.  Continue to think about the ways our buying patterns change on the Internet and take advantage of the companies that will capitalize on it first OR do it better. This will be a combination of new and old companies changing the way we shop. Remember last year, there was a reason why so many packages were delayed during the Christmas holiday by UPS and that theme is the comfort of buying things online.

- Amazon, Ebay (Paypal), Yahoo, Google, Walmart, Home Depot, UPS, Fedex

Theme 2: Mobile /APPS

The mobile wars are heating up. Finally, most of the world is warming up to a concept I've been using for quite a while: "No Debt/No Contract".  The mobile companies have used contracts to their advantage for quite some time and this has led many people to enter into never ending contracts that change usually on the companies terms. My philosophy is don't sign it until to read it. If you don't like what you read...call the company and see if you can change the terms...or don't sign it. I buy my phones myself and never enter into a contract. Many people have not paid attention to the fine print so AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint have dominated the US market. The public is tired of this model and now enters T-Mobile and their "no contract" and "cheaper packages".  And now the big companies like AT&T must follow suit with lower prices or lose customers.

Then enter the world of Apps...I can't explain the love affair for all things FLAPPY but Apps are the favorite hobby of the world.  I personally don't use very many apps but I can't deny their staying power.

- Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Apple, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Blackberry, Facebook, Whatsapp, Snapchat, Zynga, Candy Crush

...the remaining themes are to be continued

Easier Said Than Done...

“It’s been a long time, shouldn’t have left you without a dope beat to step too…”  As you know I have a love for music, especially hip-hop, so when I am thinking a song will often pop into my head.  Here, I am thinking of how long it’s been since I’ve written something to the readers out there.  I admit work, life, and stuff happens but I shouldn’t have left you without a nice article to think about.

I would like to start off by simply just being honest!  One of the primary reasons I have not written anything is that in REALITY there is not that much going on in the investment world.  Maybe I should say it different, the markets have been steadily going UP and there hasn’t been much else.  If you remember, there have been a few moments in the last year or so where I wrote that the stock market indicators lead me to believe that stocks and the overall market were headed higher for the foreseeable future.  If I were a TV personality, I can say “We Predicted This Would Happen!” but the reality is it took months and months of reading, researching, and keeping my eyes and ears open to rationalize where things were logically headed.  The goal while investing is to navigate through ALL of the NOISE (family, friends, and TV people telling you how to invest) and for you to logically conclude about where things like are headed.  Once you get a good idea about that then you can determine what and how much to invest in.  I am here to simply share my thoughts on how I navigate through the noise so that I can share those with you and I can learn from the past by coming back and reading my own writings.  This is helpful in life, because you must navigate through the noise (when choosing a house, car, job, etc.) and really get down to making a sound decision.

Here I am always looking to make a sound investment and I’m going to present 1 topic to assist you on your investment journey:

Same Companies....New Tricks (McDonald's, Best Buy, Groupon)

McDonald's Late Night Breakfast Cravings

Sometimes I feel like I could be a Fortune 500 CEO, especially when they take an idea right outta my head. Let's take the Golden Arches.  I've had this idea buzzing around in my head for years and they finally took the plunge.  McDonald's is bringing breakfast to a late night menu near you.  Sorry Denny's I think a few people make be making a quick stop at the drive thru.

Read All About It Link

Store-In-A-Store Continues With Best Buy

Best Buy continues the JC Penney concept of stores within a store.  I wonder if this is the concept for companies that have been left for dead.  Ouch...Microsoft has teamed up with Best Buy and there with be a Microsoft store within your local store.  This is such a fabulous concept Samsung has decided it will also place stores within Best Buy.  I guess they will likely win over me...because I love 1 STOP SHOPPING...but does that make this a department store??

Linky

I know I'm not here to make fun of them but rather tell you how stopping in at the drive thru can make you money.  If you think either of these will be a big hit check the stocks out.  Best Buy is finding more reasons for you to stay in the store and McDonald's want your after the bar pit stop to include something you would normally eat in the morning, anyways!

Groupon

Predictions of their demise were off. This company has stabilized since the departure of Andrew Mason, the former CEO. The stock price has rebounded and Groupon "might" be maturing. They are leaving deals open longer which was my biggest complaint (sort of) and a reason why I never signed up for Groupon. This means I can get the deal when I actually need the item and not just serving as impulse purchases.  And you just may start buying things like you do on Amazon at Groupon.  Some of you already know that Groupon sells actual goods and they have been competitive on a number of items and want to be your top destination for shopping. Stay tuned on how this plays out but its has certainly rebounded , albeit there wasn't much lower it could go.

Best Buy - The Price Is Now "Matched"

When was the last time you shopped at Best Buy?? If most people are like me it has been ages since you've physically been into their store. I used to appreciate the days when they were perceived as the low cost alternative against Circuit City and other high cost electronic box stores.  When Circuit City departed, I thought it was smooth sailing for these guys.  They were the place to turn for all my electronics and gadgets, until I started shopping online.  I still was somewhat loyal to Best Buy but this dried up because they had nothing for shoppers that valued nice products and moderate prices.  The 'Magnolia' line of products is great but EASILY way too pricey and the other lines of Best Buy branded products aren't appealing for a semi-techie guy like me that actually reads CNET reviews.  So unfortunately I exclusively started shopping online with Amazon, Newegg, and directly from electronic manufacturers (Lenovo, Dell, etc) that offered the best pricing for my products.  I even became a dreaded comparison shopper recently when I bought my entertainment system for my HD, surround sound, bass booming media room.  I went to Best Buy and was quoted thousands for a TV alone and then thousands for my surround sound system, and wiring.  I decided to by my TV online and applied the extra saving to more inches (I'm over 60 inches).  Then my receiver for my entertainment system was bought through an Amazon Gold Box deal.  My surround sound speakers came from Newegg (they even threw in free wiring) and boast enough beats to watch sports or pound out a building thumping boom from the 4th floor.

But, there may be redemption!! Best Buy just announced that they will price match competitors INCLUDING their online prices. This price effect starts NOW and is good through Nov. 17. They will revisit this matching program for the BLACK FRIDAY seasonal dates: Nov. 27 - Dec. 24. I follow the company as a possible investment but Main Street should take advantage of this unique opportunity to go back to the old school way of touching and buying your product in a store. You can walk away feeling pretty good because you came in with the BEST PRICE and they will match it without much hassle. I like physically inspecting my items and this is music to my ears.

Economic Outlook, YAHOO, All Talk, & Netflix...

Urbanomics Outlook on the Economy
Here is my outlook on the economy. The economy is like a leaky faucet, slowly dripping. If you review the last few months, the data supporting jobs and economic growth have been bad kind of like when your faucet is clogged up. But every now and then you get a surprise and a few gushes come out and occasionally the economic numbers have had a few surprises. But if you put it all together the economy continues to be a very slow drip for a population of Americans that are thirsty for jobs and an economic rebound to our investments, 401K portfolios, real estate, and lifestyles.

Do You Yahoo?
I know I do. I use Yahoo all the time. Yahoo is my home page, my email service and also my source for fantasy football. But even with all these reasons they are having trouble keeping up with the big boys of technology (Google, Amazon, Ebay). They are even used as a verb, no one ever asks whether you ‘Yahooed’ something! Well it may be time to circle the wagon on this old reliable tech company. We have a little help in stirring the pot. Dan Loeb, founder of the hedge fund Third Point sent a scathing letter to Yahoo’s Board and then kindly reminded them that he now owns a roughly 5% stake in the company. Here at Urbanomics we are fans of investors that stir the pot and when it happens at unloved companies like Yahoo we get excited.

March Matrix Notes

I could do a follow up on why I'm a MACROVALUEQUANT, but who has time, its time to unload my thoughts and unplug from the matrix. I do a lot of reading on the train and listening to the radio and have started taking notes. In the past few weeks, I've tuned into the following discussions and readings:

Ray Dalio (find his discussion on CNBC)
Mr Dalio is the hedge fund titan who runs Bridgewater Associates and rarely makes tv appearances (I heard). After a few moments of defending his unusual methods running his firm, the man behind the world's largest hedge fund was very open about the cycle of leveraging and deleveraging and where the US is at in its cycle after the crisis. He talked about the following subjects:
He noted US Equities are cheap and will benefit from currency devaluations
The money flows will benefit equities
Portfolios are not properly weighted, too much in dollar denominated currencies
Gold is a currency that many are underweight
Stimulus will last through the 4th quarter, and private credit growth will be needed

Superbowl Investing Tip ~ Invest in What You Know

This simple tip comes from the mastermind, Peter Lynch. I am completely engrossed in this strategy but rarely put it into existence and it has cost me dearly. It is so simple sometimes that we overlook the power of our own consumption and what it means. Here are some solid stocks where I have used their service and in some instances I keep returning. And if I would have bought the stock I would a very happy man.

Dominos (NYSE: DPZ) - Lets take this pizza chain. I decided to buy pizza and because I consider myself tech savvy I wanted to place the order over the internet. So I decided to use Dominos new site and technology to place and monitor my order. For someone like me, this was great to create my own pizza with toppings, see the price as I made it, and know how long it would take to expect a delivery or to go in and pick up my pizza. I did this over 2 or three months ago and had such a positive experience that I would definitely buy my pizza that way again. To read about Dominos new site and technology check out these articles from the Wall Street Journal and the website 'Storefrontbacktalk' for more information:

http://www.storefrontbacktalk.com/e-commerce/dominos-gets-e-commerce-creative/

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) - To be honest I love the fact that I know when I shop on their website that I am getting quality products at the best prices out there. My holiday shopping is quick and easy and the one thing I know is a money maker is shipping and handling, because we all have impulses and will pay more to have our goods quicker.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) The last company I will right about is Walmart. I go out of my way to shop and buy products online at this store because they truly care about service and offer me the lowest prices out there. In this economy I don't want to have to think about who is giving me the best deal...I know already WMT will deliver. And I truly believe their website and site to store capability will continue to allow shopper convenience like it did for me when I found my Playstation3 bundle package there at a price that could not be matched.

Week 1 ~ 2010

Here are a few things making some news this week:

Buying a Car – If buying a car, take a look at discontinued brands. General Motor’s Saturn and Pontiac brands may serve up some great discounts because they will soon no longer cease to exist. The real question may eventually be finding parts for any brands that will be discontinued, but if you read the consumer reviews and can find a reliable model this investment may be a good bet. If you don’t need the discontinued deal of the century, then take another look at Ford brand cars. For has resurrected itself from the dead and improved its car offerings and has grown in market share over the last year.

Throw Some Dimension’s on It – The D’s I am talking about are “DIMENSIONAL”. Here are a few reasons why movies and TV are going from 2D to 3D. Now I personally saw Avatar in 3D and now want to see it in 3D and in IMAX, why I guess because bigger is always better. If you are not noticing, the media industry is moving to 3D and this is no accident. It started with them testing us, with movies that were throwing objects at us…as I heard My Bloody Valentine and Final Destination did. Then they used it for fun films and now blockbuster biggies like Avatar. 3D is not only going to be hitting the big screen it will also be right there in your homes. Yes, the television industry wants to offer you 3D TV’s in the near future and even the station’s like ESPN have announced they will be offering certain games in 3D. The other reason I have heard that 3D is on the rise in the movie industry is to reduce piracy. Now this may make a lot of sense as this industry has been looking for the white knight answer of reducing movie piracy. It may be a great reason that Avatar, which will go down as one of the biggest movies in history is mainly being released in 3D. I truly believe it is because the movie is new and made with revolutionary detail. But I could also see the registers ringing (all the way to the bank) if one of the biggest movies of all time cannot be easily copied. I am now wondering if it is truly a better experience for watching TV and movies?? I imagine the experience will change slightly over time, but I am not sure if I would prefer to slip on my special 3D glasses if that were a requirement every time.

An Early 2010 Gift List:

GOOGLE NEXUS ONE – Google just entered the device market and is now making a phone, well sort of. The Google phone, Nexus One, is being made by HTC but is Google’s phone. One of the unique features Google will give you and me is the right to stick with our cell phone company if we like them. Most phones nowadays tell you to switch to an exclusive carrier; however, Google is going to offer its phone in a format that can work with YOUR carrier. Yes the phone is considered ‘Unlocked’, a feature that is common internationally but not here in the US. That usually explains the price, because your carrier is not helping you with the price and you aren’t locked into long –term contracts. (3.7 inch screen, 5.1 megapixel and $529 unlocked)

AMAZON KINDLE, TABLET PC’S – The first is the new e-reader device. For a generation of people that have grown up reading on screens this is the holy grail of eliminating night lights bookmarks. I am already used to downloading and it seems easy to download my books and go. For me this would be great on the train and if I can (download) and read the Wall Street Journal or web articles then I may never part with this thing. I am not sure what all formats it reads but who needs books. The Apple Tablet PC also made the list for all of the new PCs that are thin, light and will allow you to write on the screen. Yes, like you are writing on a piece of paper, hence the name tablet. Can you imagine how much paper and I didn’t even think of myself as much of a tree hugger.

TATA NANO – Tata, the Indian car manufacturer may actually set its sight on the US sooner than later. And I can fulfill my dream of adding a car to my Xmas list. For the whooping price of $2500 you can own a new vehicle. Now all I need to do is to get 100 friends to hold the gift cards and go in on purchasing me a car that will never have problems finding a parking spot in Chicago.
