Ballin' on Wall Street...Vol II

Time to do a little portfolio watching. I know a few of you may watch Mad Money with crazy Jim Cramer. Well here is my version of how to make a little dough. For a little bit of background to those of you that weren’t originally on my mailing list when I first developed my strategy I am sharing the secret sauce. Yeah, I am unleashing my picks and will track the performance of how well they do.
In regards to strategy, I use a purely quantitive model that allows me to pick stocks that I am not familiar with however meet my criteria statistically. After identifiying theses stocks I will also look to then identify current events that signal a trend. I have not decided the frequency as to which I will post and track these picks but I welcome you to follow along at home. Feel free to participate by making recommendations but also why you chose that particular stock.

mOprah's On!!

Yeah...for all those who have been waiting, it's the inagural edition of mOprah. Where Dr. Phil, Geraldo, and Bill O'Reilly failed...mOprah will suceed. A voice that represents and takes a stand for the male species. However, to ease the worries of all the women out there mOprah will take callers, emails, and anonymous posting and they will be researched and answered from the males point of view. So that we can bridge the gap between our counterparts. Burning questions you want answered...well we have answers! I just hope you can handle the truth. Names will be disguised to protect the innocent. Enjoy the first edition.

Dear mOprah:
I am a young, attractive, and fun lady. I am a loyal reader of Cosmo and can't seem to keep a good guy despite all the articles of inspiration that I read in the magazine. For example, the most recent subject was "105 Ways to Get a Good Boyfriend". However, even with all this expertise provided by Cosmo I still can't seem to get the guy I want. What do I do!?

Sincerely,

My favorite martini is Cosmopolitan

Dear Cosmopolitan:
We appreciate your concern here at mOprah and would definitely like to comment on your situation. First, we would recommend that you put the Cosmo magazine down and pick up tips from your male perspective friend...mOprah. The first mistake you made was truly believing that there are 105 ways to land a guy. All that article provided was 105 reasons for you to be mislead into buying the magazine. After communicating with A few Good Men out there, we have developed and will limit our list to the 5 things you need to do Find and Keep a good man.

1. Independence - Ladies unlike July the 4th, this should be celebrated every day! A man relates and respects a woman who can take time out for herself to do the things that she likes. Because a happy woman equates to a happy man. It also reduces what we call the "Snuggle" problem...Static Cling. That's right, 8/10 men polled here at mOprah cited Static Cling as something they like to keep to a minimum.

2. Total Package - Believe it or not, guys do notice the little things. The next thing you need to do is bring the TP or total package to the table. Yes, Jiffy Lube would be proud if you are one of the ladies that keeps up with the daily maintenance. No you are not a care and we may not always say it but we do notice and appreciate the little things: when your hair is done, your hands/feet are soft, and when you smell good. The reason why we appreciate the TP is because its too much work for us and thats what makes you unique. As a guy, I don't have the time to make sure my hands are soft, and for young college men out there everywhere Axe...the bodyspray may get the invention of the decade.

3. No drama - Mary J. Blige, the R&B diva said it best when she coined this phrase in her hit song. Women if you take anything away from our informational session today it should be this. Reduce the drama and increase the happiness. This means don't assume the worst from your guy. A guy's night out doesn't mean...a night of irresponsible partying and drinking (ok not always). Finally sports and video games are not the enemy! No drama means if your man is proactive about contacting you, spends QT or quality time with you, and likes to do things for you that you will appreciate...he is a Good guy. So less drama is definitely positive.

4. Patience - Women please exhibit patience when dealing with men. Being the simple creatures that we are, it often takes a few times for something to sink in. It could range from making a decision, getting your to do list accomplished, or even communication. Men are methodical in their actions and all we want to do is get it right.

5. Wow Factor - Last but not least is the wow factor. Guys don't usually talk to other guys about specifics in their relationships. But when they do, they usually comment on the wow factor about their leading lady. This is the trickiest but most of the important things to remember...ladies focus on your strengths and turn it into a wow. Wows are hard to define but here are a few that have come across the tables of mOprah... We call the list, the Wow She:
- has a passion for life
- likes to cook
- doesn't mind watching sports
- goes the extra mile for my special requests
- suprises me with thoughtful gifts
- has a great occupation
- likes to/helps me clean
- remembers the things that interest me
- knows how to express her concerns, rationally
- enjoys working out
- really trusts me when she's not around
- puts up with my bullsh@#!

For extra brownie points, it you can master mixing Wow Factors you will be elevated to status known to most men as Goddess status. This is like that secret bonus level on a video game that can only be unlocked by sincere hard work and patience...or for most of you gaming junkies you go out and get the cheat code book and guess what, that is what mOprah. This is your cheat code to getting the job done.

Guys if I have missed anything, please post them here...and Ladies if you have any other burning questions please post or use the email icon you get your questions researched.

Sincerely,

mOprah

Reliving Your Childhood...

Yeah let me take you back to the old school. How many people remember when all you had to do was get up, eat breakfast, go to school for half of a day, and you got to watch, what you thought were the coolest shows on the earth. For those of you whose parents were way to strict I will apologize ahead of time. Because, you will never relive some of the great shows that were on the air before all of this Barney, Power Ranger, Pokemon, & Silent Bob crap. Real shows where most had meanings and of course the Good vs. Evil plot. Let's revisit my favorite cartoons and situtation shows that had me on the couch tuning in everyday. I am only gonna post and few so I can get some feedback on what shows you watched as kids. I am a little biased because growing up it was easy to just turn to Nickelodeon and what all their shows. So here is my rating of how the all time greats rank:
Cartoon/Show Star Ranking (5=Really good) Link for more info

Get the inside scoop

Voltron - This show was the real deal. I guess from doing a little research I need to specify that I watch the Lion Voltron series (there are multiple ones...check the site). Classic good versus evil and I loved when they came together to form the mighty Voltron from 5 separate lion robots.
Rating: **** (Better than the wack Power Rangers)
http://www.voltronforce.com/

ThunderCats - Not sure what this cat/lion theme was all about growing up but hey it worked. I remember the characters like it was yesterday. Lion-O(I alwasy thought they were saying Lionel), Panthero, and I Snarf. Lionel was the leader and had an amazing sword that grew when he said the phrase (Thunder...Thunder...Thundercats...Whoooah) The bad guy, who was pretty scary as a child was Mumm-Ra who was made of bandages. Great show, another classic.
Rating: ***

X-Men - The coolest characters came from this cartoon series. It is an obvious favorite that has spawned two movies already. This was definitely a grown up cartoon series and that dealt with mutants that had special powers and usually defended the helpless world of normal humans from bad mutants. They protected humans because they wanted to prove that mutants and humans could coexist peacefully.
Rating: *****
http://www.marvel.com/index.htm

Smurfs - The land of the blue minature people. All I can say is everyone grew up with the Smurfs. I always wanted to know why there was only one smurf that was a chick...Smurfette and I think everyone hit on her even Papa Smurf. Here is a snippet:
The cartoon featured the adventures of the Smurfs who lived in the mushroom cottages of Smurf Village with their 542-year-old leader, Papa Smurf. Their lives would have been perfect were it not for the villainous Gargamel, an evil wizard who spent his days trying to capture the Smurfs. Gargamel's cat Azrael added to the menace, always looking for a snack.
Rating: ***1/2

FraggleRock - Don't remember much about this show but that I used to watch it all the time. I know that the Fraggles lived underground. Check out this summary courtesy of IMDB:
Doc and his dog Sprocket have a hole in their wall, behind which live little furry creatures known as Fraggles in a place called Fraggle Rock. The Rock is also home to the Doozers (who are knee-high to a Fraggle) and the Gorgs (who are giants that think they rule the Rock). One gang of Fraggles (Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober, and Red), under the guidance of the all-knowing Trash Heap (Marjorie), learn about each other and their neighbors and eventually befriend the Doozers, the Gorgs--and even Doc and Sprocket. Meanwhile, Gobo's Uncle Matt explores Outer Space (our world) and sends postcards to his nephew about the Silly Creatures (that's us).
Rating: ***
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085017/

Today’s Special - The show no one seems to remember except for me. This aired on Nickelodeon and was awesome. Read this summary: It was about a department store, and the adventures of its inhabitants. The main four characters are: Jeff, Jody, Muffy, and Sam. Jeff was the main character and a mannequin by day, and a living, breathing human by night. However, in order for Jeff to remain a human, he must always keep his magical hat on. If he loses the hat, he becomes a mannequin again, and then the hat has to be put back on his head, and someone has to say the magic words "Hocus Pocus Alimagocus".

How about these...do you remember:
CareBears He-Man, She-Ra, GI Joe, Curious George, Inspector Gadget, Bananaman, David the Gnome, Danger Mouse, Mighty Mouse, Mr. Roger's , Sesame Street!!!

For just a little bit... Naw you need to see the rest

What does this mean you might be asking. Well this is my zodiac sign and it is important because I just celebrated a birthday: NOVEMBER 5TH. So if you forgot you still have a grace period to call, send expensive gifts, cards, candy…you know the deal. So I have heard a few smirks because some people know I was born in ’79. So I hear the occasional you know you were “born in the 70s” or that I am a “70s baby” and that makes you old. Paaaaleease… I was a hop, skip, and jump away from the 80s. Even worse someone asked me how does it feel to be older than a quarter of a century. Not funny because now I occasionally check for any gray hairs and periodically get false alarms when I have lotion in my beard.

So I decided this year to throw a little birthday bash for myself. I’ve been known to party hard so I figured why not throw a party, P. Diddy style. So I set out to find a really chill spot in Chicago that all of my friends and their friends could appreciate. It had to be trendy, the music had to be on point, and the liquor had to be top shelf. So I called up all of my close friends and we hit club VIP style. To top it off, I came out fresh to death, and had to light up a couple of big boy cigars this weekend. If you're on the market, try my personal favorites... the Acid's Kuba Kuba and the Cohiba. And boy did we throw back of some drinks that night. I had a wrist band that gave me all access to the premium shelf all night. So of course, nothing was flowing out of my cup except for Hennessey, Belvedere, Grey Goose...and we had to pop a champagne bottle.

Check me out this past weekend, doing it big with all my friends. I love everyone for coming out for this last minute event that I put together. This was the best weekend possible, and I can't believe the amazing turnout of people that I've known for both a little and long time. You'll see me out with the guys on Friday and kickin' @ Club Wet on Saturday.

Turn My Music Up

Yeah I am updating the list of tracks to look out for. For all my Reggae fans I think the Damion Marley album is not bad and I have been listening to it for a long time now. I like "Road to Zion" a great collaboration with Nas. Also, another album that was surprisingly good is Young Jeezy recent album...he definitely stood apart from other artists in Boyz N Da Hood and his alubm proves why. Here are other songs that are definitely worth giving a look:

R&B
Floetry – Supastar
Trey Songz – Gotta Go
Avant Ft. Lil Wayne – You Know What
Mariah Carey - any song or remix!!
Black Buddafly - Rock a bye
Jamie Foxx - Unpredictable

Rap
Damian Marley - Road to Zion
Juelz Santana – There it Go (The Whistle Song)
Chamillionaire – Turn it up
Young Jeezy - Trap Star
Three Six Mafia - Stay Fly
Nelly - Grillz

Hanging Out

For just a little bit... Naw you need to see the rest

This past weekend I got a chance to hang out with my boys. This is my version of CRIBS, I was over my boy MN's new crib in the city. Of course, he is doing it BIG, did you check out the baby LCD screen in his room...all I can say is WOW.

Its all about the flat screen. And to top it all off he owns the whole damn rooftop, so he's got a skyline view of the city. So with a place like this you have to throw a gathering to watch the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. Check us out:

After partying at MN's during the SOX game, I had to catch up with my boys and hit Rush & Division (see Where in the World...Chicago). Check out a some pics of me and the crew:

Where in the world...Chicago

The nightlife in Chicago is definitely is always a lot of fun. As you all know I don't make it out every weekend but when I do... partying is like special glass of Hennessey you expect nothing but the best. And most people know that I like good music so I tend to be partial to the places that don't let me down. So when in the city here are some good spots to hang out in:

"The Apartment" - Great place, young crowd and the first bar/club that was sporting a big screen tv with a playstation on it for the folks chillin in the lounge area. On Thursdays, drinks are next to nothing and the music keeps the dance floor jumping.
Star Count: ***

"Funky Buddha": Yeah the spot that I like a lot. It has a great atmosphere good music from hiphop, R&B, neo-soul and even a few oldies. This club is not large and gets crowded very quick. If you love your space this may not be your place. But it has all the essentials of a great club:
1. Slightly Upscale Crowd - No offense, all I mean is that people care about what they where...and a door price that ensures that you are a true partier
2. Neck Turners - Honestly there are a few people that may cause you whiplash at the end of the night
3. MUSIC! - Yes, no time off for the DJ...he keeps the hits coming
4. Elements of Suprise - The X factor, bigs acts and surprise visits often frequent Buddha. Kanye, J. Legend, Questlove, Doug E Fresh, Bulls players, David Banner, and on and on.
Star Count: ****

"Redno5": This is a really good club. Its got a nice dance floor upstairs and plush lounge couches downstairs. Its got a Buddha feel but much larger.
1. Upscale Crowd - No offense, all I mean is that people care about what they where...and a door price that ensures that you are a true partier. The bouncers may be the toughest to get past in the business. Shout out to Jovi who got me in free last weekend...see it pays to speak to people on the way to the bars.

2. Neck Turners - I have walked out of here with a neck brace.

3. MUSIC! - Yes, no time off for the DJ...he keeps the hits coming. Don't forget the live percussion band and a MC that freestyles while walking through the club.

Don't hate on my bling...

Here is part of the story. Changed you're mind, read the entire story.

The NBA has announced that a dress code will go into effect at the start of the season. Players will be required to wear business-casual attire when involved in team or league business. They can't wear visible chains, pendants or medallions over their clothes. (Courtesy of the AP)

A number of celebrated players have voiced their displeasure with this new rule addition. Everyone from Stephan Jackson (Pacers), Allen Iverson (76ers), and Paul Pierce (Celtics) have called this an outright attack on the hip-hop culture. It definitely begs the question of is this move racially movitated and how far can the league go to exercise its power over a league with players that are predominantly African-American and has a large hip-hop following. Who has the final say of what is professional or not? If I wore my bling to the office it would definitely turn heads...but should it. In the 70s, when Afro's where a symbol of a cultural movement many African-Americans wore this as an everyday hairstyle. Today, are we scared of rocking the conservative norm by not wearing Afro's, braids, or bling?

Or is it more of a regional or state issue? I often hear someone comment that they like another person's hairstyle...but they would never wear it because they wouldn't be able to wear it to work. But if you in an area where a large number of people where locks like down South or where people may be more liberal like on the West Coast is it more acceptable?

I am guilty of wearing a low-key hairstyle and dress code to ensure that I don’t rock the boat. And even today at lunch I saw a guy with an earring and thought whether that was a positive move on his part.

So does wearing bling mean that you are a thug? I think not and evidently neither does Sarbanes Oxley. When crimes were being committed at Enron, Worldcom, Adelphia, HealthSouth, and by Martha Stewart there were definitely suits and ties involved. But maybe we would have given them a break if they had worn their bling bling.

Til Death do us part...

Yeah, it must be in the water. The
wedding bells are ringing this time around. I am glad to see that my friends are tying the knot and putting up the white picket fences. What does this mean...is it time for me to hang it up! I think not... its time for me to continue to hold out like a sports athlete looking for more money. My goal is to live vicariously through my married friends. When times are good I will be there to enjoy in there happiness...and when times are rough I will be there trying to contain my laughter. But seriously, I think that this is a major step in every couples life and I wish them nothing but happiness because finding the love of your life is truly a blessing.

Its takes a village to raise a child

As all of us continue to embark down that road of building a family, remember what is takes to raise a child. It is great to know that my extended family continues to grow right before my eyes. I remember when I was younger all of the "aunts" and "uncles" that weren't related to me by blood but were still family. I am a firm believer that all these people help shape the lives of young children. I was glad that I was able to spend some time in my old stomping grounds...South Bend and I got a chance to see my extended family and their beautiful children.

The Bonehead of the Year Award goes to:

Me, yes yours truly. Let me share a crazy story with you. Two weekends ago I went out to downtown Chicago, right. And you all know that I drive a SUV…so I am basically gonna throw away about a ¼ of a tank making the haul back and forth. After a great night at Funky Buddha Lounge, one of the tighter clubs in Chicago, I eventually made my way home. And of course the weekend includes trying to sleep in until my phone wakes me up from either my friends wanting to hear about the upcoming college football games or YES I admit it I set my alarm to get up before the first big game on Saturday. So I am basically running on fumes and go to get something to eat at the 5 star Burger King establishment. Well I am in the rest of the evening watching football and making some extra change as each game finishes up. I crash for the night and get up the next day to do shopping. As you know for a guy the best place in the world to shop is Walmart, the true ONE STOP SHOP. The first thing on my to do list was to get some gas prior to shopping. But with prices being what they are nowadays, you can’t just stop anywhere you got to find the bargain, right! WRONG, I had just passed an expensive gas station when my car automatically starting slowing down and luckily I was able to turn into the local school close by. I wasn’t sure what was going on and then realized my fate…I had ran out of GAS!! So luckily a good Samaritan stopped by and drove me about a block to the gas station I had just passed. I was able to buy a 1 gallon mini tank to fill my truck. From there I pulled into the same expensive station and filled up.
J.G’s lesson of the week: Don’t Be Cheap, fill up on some gas. And this is really important because my good Samaritan had just had that incident happen to his son but unfortunately it was on the highway and if you run out of fuel and your car is going very fast you can burn your fuel pump or something like that…and it will cost you over $500 dollars.

Where in the world...Las Vegas!!

Yes people the saga continues. The annual trip to Vegas went down over Labor Day. This time around some special folks came out. Some folks really close to me since my Naptown (Indianapolis) days were out and about. I want to give a special shot out to the following people for living it up with me that week:
TP
Da Thrill
Smitty
AT

So leave a post telling me what you think of our latest trip and also let me know when you are joining the next road trip. Because on a serious tip...we all go through life at warp speed and its always important to slow down and enjoy it with your family and friends. Look out for a trip to England for New Year's '06...TP's sponsoring this trip, so hit him up for details. Also I've got plans in the works to take a trip back to Africa (Sierra Leone & Senegal are on my radar) and also Brazil (Rio) within the upcoming year or two. It won't be cheap but as with every adventure it could be life changing. So select the links below and view the slideshow:

Where in the world...

Yeah at long last, South Beach has been unleashed. As you know that S. Beach is one of my favorite spots. We went down there over Memorial Day, which is a great time for hip hop lovers to see thousands of people flocking to the area to experience the ambiance of the South's version of the city that never sleeps. It was an A-list crowd of musicians and athletes, great weather, and fun people. Check us out in a new slideshow of uneditted pics from Miami:

The Dynasty

Here is the part of the story. Changed you're mind, read the entire story.

When one label, company, or team rules over all the others we call it a dynasty. Well then what better way to describe the behemoth known as Microsoft. As a full disclaimer, I guess I should mention that I owe shares of Microsoft Corp. My interest in this tech giant began when they finally realized that holding over billions of dollars in cash was not in the best interest of their shareholders. At the time, the market was a little dicey and quality companies were hard to come by and Microsoft was just sitting on mounds of cash. Then they decided to flip the script. They offered a special $3 a share dividend for each share of stocked owned. And the nice thing about the stock market is they even tell you when the last date is that you can get into a stock to get a piece of the dividend. And to put this offer into perspective, most companies and even Microsoft’s normal dividend after their special offering is usually cents to the share (Microsoft is around .08c a share). And after doing a little research today they still have way more money that they know what to do with. Microsoft has increased at its fastest pace for the last three quarters and to keep the dough from piling up too high they are going to continue to take measure to give their shareholders a good return on their investment. Check out this recent article:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/240395_msftdividend13.html?source=rss

Now for even better news…the sleeping giant is moving. Many have argued that Microsoft is so large now and their technologies are so widely used they have little reason to innovate. However, in the great capitalist country called America there is no such thing as a day off.
In 2006, Microsoft plans to shake things up again with the launch of a brand new version of its operating system and it’s Windows Office platform. The operating system as most of you may know as Longhorn is now being called “Vista”. And the unveiling of the new Windows Office Suite will be called Windows Office 12. In an even shorter timeframe, Microsoft should see a bump in activity from the late 2005 release of its XBOX 360. A buzz on the streets has been created about the next generation console that will hit the streets being the unveiling of Sony’s Playstation 3 (slated to be sold in spring of ’06).

My recommendation is buy and hold Microsoft for the long haul. In this industry, cash is kind and they have plenty of it. If you’re looking for a little help on when to buy the company with the ticker MSFT. I would buy on any pullback in the stock, the high 25s and low 26 dollar range are adequate.
Ball ‘Til You Fall Rule #1: Show Me the Money…Companies that pay and increase their dividends over time are great investments and provide a steady stream of portfolio income.

Disclosure: I own shares in Microsoft Corp.

Are Diamonds Forever...

I give props to Kanye for introducing the masses to the casualties of what’s going on in Africa, especially Sierra Leone. After a great song like this one I really wonder if everyone got the right message from it or did they just take a piece of it. It touches the subject of conflict or “blood” diamonds. Sierra Leone is obviously a subject close to my heart because that is where my family is from. In my opinion, most individuals think as long as they verify that their diamond pieces have no “conflict” or no one died from them then everything is all good. Unfortunately because diamonds are forever and people across the world will pay serious dough for these items, no one touches on the even bigger problem of the companies and countries that continue to try to corner the natural resources of Africa…a country very rich in natural resources. What should be addressed is how do we get these African countries to not be manipulated by these foreign countries, who cause “conflict” by manipulating the people and the government into getting them diamonds at any cost. Which in turn causes the different groups within these tiny countries to continue to fight each other over power to be able to sit down at the table at the end of the day with these foreign countries and companies and negotiate how to make a quick buck by selling away our valuable natural resources at any cost…including human lives. Kayne did touch on the fact that many people have lost limbs, lives, and families members due to the many civil wars over power in these small countries. My question is when will we demand a fair and equitable process to take place when dealing with natural resources like diamonds. We often have taken great measures with the sweatshops around the world, why not the manipulative forces behind the diamond game.

Thanks for listening and here is a summary of the Kanye West "Late Registration" album that I feel is fairly accurate after listening to it over and over (courtesy of Amazon reviewer, Constant):

Kayne West returns with his second solo album "Late Registration" (2005). To say Kayne West has made an impact on the music and entertainment world is an understatement, simply read the latest copy of Time magazine and you will see what I mean. Kayne West's production skills are definitely on point as beats throughout this album are excellent. The albums single's "Gold Digger" feat. Jamie Foxx and "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" are both distinct tracks, I prefer the latter. My favorite collaboration on this album is the first track "Heard Em Say", Kayne West and Maroon 5's Adam Levine team up for a memorable cut. Some production help comes from Just Blaze who sampled Curtis Mayfield "Move On Up" for "Touch The Sky" an uplifting track, which has West and Lupe Fiasco shining. The next couple of tracks are good, though in all honesty I find myself listening to the beats/samples more the lyrics. The Hank Crawford sample used on "Drive Slow" reminds me of the one used on a track off 2Pac's All Eyes on Me. Kayne West helped Game out on "Dreams" so it makes sense that he return the favor on "Crack Music". Brandy laces "Bring Me Down" with some smooth vocals, while Kayne West talks about the haters. The remix of "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" feat. Jay-Z follows. Hov's former rival Nas drops in and provides some substance on "We Major". Kayne West praises and shows his love for his mom on the dedication "Hey Mama". Consquence and Cam'Ron hook up with Kayne for "Gone" another standout, which samples Otis Redding's "It's To Late". Production wise this album is impressive, West samples and innovates well. Lyrically I find Kayne West to be hit or miss, shining on some tracks while barely leaving an impression on others. That said he remains the same rapper, and I respect him for not trying to take on another persona as some do. I recommend picking up "Late Registration" its an album that vibes well, one which fans of many different musical genres will enjoy. he finally did.

I do disagree with the review slightly...my favorite collaboration is Gone with Cam'ron and Consequences.

Here is the ranking of tracks of this album:
1. Diamonds are from Sierra Leone including the (Remix) - Kanye's flow is finally on point and Jay Z rips the remix
2. Gold Digger - nuff said, he's educating folks, club jam, and females are out there telling on themselves...thanks Kanye
3. Crack Music - Hard beat, and he keeps it real about the hiphop game and the influence on America
4. Gone - features Cam'ron, a really nice infectious sample
5. Touch The Sky
Hey Mama - There is a tie b/c both of the are happy and uplifting tracks

Heard Em Say is just okay, but with Adam Levine he should get mad MTV airplay

Ballin on Wall Street: The Intro

What’s Going On…

In the words of my main man Marvin Gaye, I have to ask this question. There are so many things that are devastating this country at this point. For some that have been watching the numbers it was definitely pointing to a direction of economic prosperity. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers have been at higher than expected levels, employment numbers, the housing market, and even the stock market have all been on the rise. However, as we all know there are and we still face a number of hurdles in maintaining this progress.

At first, we had the war in Iraq. Being an avid stock market participator I watch the events fold as uncertainty rose around the war. The market was taking a dive and the only thing worth buying was defensive stocks and commodity plays. Common stock picks at the time were Halliburton, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing for defensive plays. Oil was bubbling as a major topic and industry stalwarts of the beaten down sector were mentioned as huge turnaround plays. Common names here were Exxon, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, international oil stocks, the hard to refine oil sands in Canada, the refineries, etc.
As I have been quoted as saying I have a love/hate relationship with the gas pump. At this time I owned or was researching the following stocks ( I will try to include prices, if you want a jaw dropper see where some are at now). So every time I paid at the pump I was getting cash back in my account:
PetroChina (PTR) – bought in the mid 40s
Cheasapeake Energy (CHK) – bought around 17
Layne Christensen (LAYN) - bought at 13.95
Valero (VLO) – bought in the late 40s
XTO Energy (XTO)– bought around early to mid 20s
S&P Energy Fund (XLE) – bought around the early 30s

They all ran up to huge profits and I sold PTR, CHK, LAYN, and XLE. Who would have guessed what was next to make this look like a dumb move…

- The uncertainty of the global landscape – Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Korea
- Inflation – as inflation continues to rise the cost of normal goods will continue to rise
- Hurricanes – The devastation of the SE due to natural disasters is also affecting the where a number of the countries largest refineries are located

At this point, it will be interesting to watch the market reaction to these events. I remember how the market slowly went numb and didn’t react viciously every time there was a new story out of Iraq anymore. I am not sure if this will continue but Hurricanes, a potential Housing Bubble, and rising interest rates are still looming over this economy.

Just as of today the protected oil reserves are being released to ease the tension over gas prices. The EPA has even relaxed its emission and sulfur standards to assist during this period of slight instability. The question has been asked, “At what point will people really be affected and change their habits due to the world that’s changing around us”. And who knows what the answer is I thought it would be $3 dollar a gallon gas prices. But that should be eclipsed all over the country by Labor Day Weekend.

Finally, please take the time out to pray for all the people being impacted in the South because of the hurricanes. There are devastating pictures all over the Internet and constant new coverage. Unfortunately, I am usually aware from the market’s standpoint of how these things will play out so I can keep you updated there.

Be on the lookout for my 1st edition of Ball Street my version of how to make money on the street and how to stretch your dollar during tough times. Here is a peek of watch to watch for because of the changing environment.

Oil, Oil, Oil – to put it in perspective oil at around $28 dollars a barrel was average just a few years ago when I barely paid attention. Now it has tipped the scales at $71!! And where is it going up... and its not coming down anytime soon. Stock plays in this area should continue to be the refineries: Valero (VLO), Suncor (SUN), and Royal Dutch (RDS). Keep an eye on the large service sector: Exxon Mobil (XOM), Haliburton (HAL), and Schlumberger (SLB) to name a few.
Watch the commodity sectors closely. Metals, mining, and minerals will be big going forward. Look for Massey Energy (MEE) and Peabody Energy (BTU) to lead the charge. Watch some of the specialty areas such as liquefied natural gas (LNGs) plays, oil sand companies, international oil companies, and alternative fuel companies.

More to come so stay tuned.

Do you Party?

In the immortal words of the Ice Cube hit song, "We Be Clubbin". If you don't believe me check out the pics for our latest venture in South Beach for Memorial Day (LinkNote: Knuckleheads do not open up any links I send you at work...they have been taken down for the moment). So for all you all you looking to do it big whenever you travel you must stop in and party at some of the best clubs that made my list. Yes, the Top Five, dance 'til you drop, the party doesn't stop, the drinks stay flowing until the sun comes up party destinations. I call it my "Do you Party?" list. I got the phrase from a cat when I was in Jamaica who as soon as I got off the plane and went to get my bags asked me if I like to party. And of course, being the club goer that I am I had to inform him that I was ready to party all week. But he asked me again if I was ready to party and I quickly realized that he wasn't talking about clubbin'...if you know what I mean. So I know the supense is killing you...but if you've been to any of these places and have thoughts or comments please share your experiences and post a comment.

The "Do You Party?" Top 5 List:

Close Calls: They no longer make the list because if you are over 21...okay that maybe a little unfair more like over 27 you may feel like a senior citizen. Yep you guessed it, the hottest spots in the Sunshine State during Spring Break bring in the close calls of tightest clubs you must visit. Club LaVela, claims the title of the largest nightclub in America. And from my visit to Panama City you will hear no arguments from me. One of the largest and craziest clubs I've been to in my day. Pool parties and wet T-shirts contests by day and non-stop dancing by night. Here's the link to their website: http://www.clublavela.com/. If you make a move to the other coast of Florida you will find Daytona Beach and Club 600 North. 600 North is the tightest club by far in Daytona. With a massive wall of TV's and home to crazy spring breakers and black college reunion this spot can't be beat. I have been to Daytona twice and it hasn’t let me down yet. Check us out partying with Lil Jon and AJ formerly of 106& Park.

5. Coming in at the five spot is the longstanding bar, Fat Tuesday. Whether you’re in Cancun or South Beach, Fat Tuesday is always looking out for your best interest. In Cancun, you’re liable to find MTV throwing beach parties during the day. And at night, if you aren’t in a coma induced state from the booze cruise you may be partying all night. On South Beach, Fat Tuesday is one of the best spots to be on Ocean Drive. You can easily find yourself sitting around a table watching beautiful women walk by, see Slim Thug and other famous celebs entering the joint, or just walk in order their famous frozen daiquiris and get wild.
Fat Tuesday with Slim Thug in the house:

4. Holding down the number four spot has to be Cancun’s hottest night club Coco Bongo’s. This is one of the largest clubs I ever stepped foot in. With an upper deck and a main floor that spans the globe this spot is absolutely crazy. With live acts performing while the DJ’s spinning your liable to see a Michael Jackson impersonator, trapeze artists zipping by overhead, and confetti dropping to celebrate like its…Coco Bongo.

http://www.cocobongo.com.mx/

3. One of the hardest choices was to figure out were to place the club that comes in at number 3. Club Rain at the Palms is definitely one of the hottest spots in Viva Las Vegas. Appropriately named, Club Skin is their outdoor area with a stage, dancing area, and deck chairs. Indoors, Rain definitely keeps it steamy with its sultry dancers and they turn the heat up with real life flame producing pyrotechnics. A few times I thought the hairs on the back of my neck got burned. But get there early, the lines for Rain stretch through most of the casino and can get confused with the equally long lines for the GhostBar.

2. At the two spot, Club Mansion formerly known as Level is definitely holding it down. Again, I have been to this spot before and after the name change. But nothing has changed here. An ‘A’ list club where you party with the likes of Lil Scrappy, dance to Funkmaster Flex performing live on stage, and live like star. But be ready to shell out some cash…Mansion is known for great VIP sections and we should know because we held down a spot during New Years a few years back. But a shot out must be sent to the other tight clubs on South Beach such as Crobar, Opium, Deep because the lines stay long and the crowd is always looking good. Oh be on the lookout for the Bentley, Phantom's, and other tight rides rolling by.

1. A now for what you have all been waiting for… the number one club on my list. This year’s title goes to Rum Jungle in Las Vegas. Rum Jungle is one of the most eccentric clubs that I have been to. Its got a nice vibe with cascading water flowing throughout the club. Again, highrise performers are seen above performing tricks that seem impossible. The music is keeps your head bobbing all night and you’ll catch a glimpse of the live band that plays along with your favorite hits. Whew, that’s what I said when I went to this place. It’s got a nice elevated dance floor and the place fills up quick. And since I will be there again this Labor Day, I will definitely let you know my thoughts. But if history repeats itself all you will see are pics of me smiling.
