Mellody Hobson - African-American | Woman | Sports Owner

I have a favorite saying when I do business presentations. I tell anyone I'm mentoring, don't focus on the hype...PAY ATTENTION TO OWNERSHIP. I follow up with an example, you and I love LeBron James and admire his wealth...BUT someone is cutting him a paycheck. He has a boss and you should know who that person is. Aim to be a boss, aim to be an owner. You've seen from my Mansa Musa network of friends; I like to metaphorically rub elbows and build an eclectic network of business mentors by researching and learning from some of the best in business, academics, and philanthropy. I've often written about John Rogers, an African American businessman out of Chicago who built Ariel Investments and an Ariel charter school just blocks away from my home on the South Side of Chicago. I learned very early about a rising star named Mellody Hobson by following John Rogers. Mellody is a co-CEO of Ariel Investments and the chairwoman of the board of directors at Starbucks. Notice, I did not start by saying she is the wife of George Lucas (yes that famous director) because she's carved a lane for herself that is quite impressive. Clearly Mellody is not done yet and was recently announced as a minority owner of the sports franchise, Denver Broncos.

Philadephia 76ers Ownership (for Sale)

It's no secret Michael Rubin, who I listen to whenever he is on CNBC is on in my Mansa Musa Network. I joke that he and Mark Cuban are like big kids living our every young man's dream. Billionaire from their sports business activities and then they became majority or minority owners in sports franchises. Well my boy Michael Rubin is selling his stake in the 76ers as it conflicts with his Fanatics business which recently got into the sports card business after its purchase of Topps. Once I heard this, I rattled off a list of names who should invest in this AMAZING opportunity. I'm on record that Michael Rubin may put in a good word for his friends who could band together to purchase his 10% stake.

Screenshot of Michael Rubin's Instragram

In my opinion, here's who I could see that might be a part of this list:

  • Kevin Hart - Philly native
  • Meek Mill - good friend to Michael Rubin
  • Robert Kraft - billionaire owner of the New England Patriots
  • Jay Z - partnered with Michael Rubin and Meek Mill on criminal Justice reform
  • Lil Baby - new buddy of Rubin and Rubin acknowledged Lil Baby contacts him for investment advice

Then I saw a post from Rick Ross. I've written a few posts about how I love how Rozay is moving across his investments. He's on offense and says he would be interested in that 10% stake. I love it, minority ownership, minority excellence. #bossmoves

Coming soon is a post on Health -- The Body. You have to invest and know the data about your body. Like many people of color, I get nervous about hospitals and doctors. Thanks to my corporate job, I was exposed to annual exams and blood tests. Unfortunately, when I made the shift to being an entrepreneur I didn't keep up with my annual exams. And it may be costing me...stay tune for a future post on Health and how that impacts your Wealth.

Also Coming Soon - a series on #HowtoInvest. People have been reaching especially after the spikes in Gamestop, AMC, and other stock to learn the basics. When to Sell A Stock

Enough talking -- pictures and videos are worth a thousand words, so I plan to move into the digital age here soon. I'm an old soul in a millennial body. Here is a video on how to sell from someone in my #MansaMusa network, they've helped me build my mini empire and I appreciate him. He is a part of my #ABilliSquad contacts as his network is worth over $1 Billion dollars. Ladies and gentlemen, introducing Ron Baron. He and I have pontificated investments in Tesla, Manchester United and a few others. Listen to this interview and tidbits on when Ron Baron decided to sell some shares in Tesla:

How To Build A Business

Next, it's no secret my main hustle is what built my #sidehustle. I tell people to stop reinventing the wheel and focus on what you are good at. I am great at risk management and help Fortune 50, 100, 500, and multinationals manage their financial and cyber risks in their corporations. Now I want to help Main Street. So my side hustle is a cyber business that gives companies what they want. I do NOT advertise yet I get 10-15 leads a week. My skills filled a very specialized need companies want and so should your business. If not you need volume...sell like crazy to make your money. Not everyone can be Walmart or Amazon so really ask yourself...does my side hustle fill a need. Enough talk. Here is a video from my mentor who is part of my #MansaMusa network and an #ABilliSquad contact as his net worth is over $1 billion. We are popping bottles because his Armand de Brignac champagne brand (we know it as Ace of Spades) got a significant value boost this week. Moet decided to buy a 50% stake in his business. Oddly enough this gent cements his powerhouse status when my buddy Jack Dorsey decided to buy a majority stake is his music streaming business Tidal. Introducing my guy Jay-Z, please listen to why he built his brands (lack of appreciation for the strength in numbers PoC brought to the champagne industry):

Representation

I often talk about strength in numbers. The term used in Corporate America is governance. You have to have a seat at the table or in the room where a decision is made. For me, I am the primary decision maker in my side hustle business...you need me so we have to negotiate terms directly. In life, the decision makers are often your elected officials. You need to know them, influence them, and ensure they are with you to impact change. In the Corporate world we, people of color need Board Representation. The Board is who the CEO reports to --- believe it or not. Even Lebron James reports to a CEO...and that CEO reports to a Board --- so stop hating on how much athletes of color make, there is still a CEO who can afford to pay the checks of all the players on one team and usually he or she is a member of my #ABilliSquad network. Take David Tepper, who owns the Carolina Panthers, Chamath P. is a owner in the Golden State Warriors. Steve Cohen owns the Mets, the Glazer family are owners of not just the Tampa Bay Bucs (superbowl champs) but also Manchester United. If we want change you must be a decision / deal maker, be able to influence that person or persons, or have a majority of Congress, state officials or the Board with you. To do that we must all come together as a diverse group of people and use our strength in numbers to make change. Please watch this final video of how my buddy Michael Rubin, yes member of my  #ABilliSquad network and owner of the Philadelphia 76ers brought Magic Johnson onto the board of directors of his of sports merchandising company Fanatics.
It's no secret Magic is my favorite player of all time and a damn good investor. Glad to see African American representation on boards:

A 21 Savage Look Into – Business Income, Risk, & Expenses

A Conclusion to Side Hustle 101 Series

Income
Music has always played a big part in people’s life.  Reading through my blog over the years, you will see that it is always top of mind for me. So when I drop some knowledge on the subject of income I could reference:
·         21 Savage – A Lot
·         YG – Big Bank
·         Jay Z – Big Pimpin

But I’d rather hit you with a simple rule I learned I learned from Warren Buffett: “Never Lose Money”. His second rule: “Remember Rule #1”. J  This rule is so crucial I use it as a baseline for my other pillars now:
·         “Never Lose Faith”
·         “Never Stop Learning”
·         “Stay Healthy”
Make sure your business and investments make more money than they lose and life becomes a lot easier. Stress over risks to your business and try to get the best return on your investment when you have expenses.

Risk Management
I spend most of my time stressing over things that will derail my pillars in life and my investments. If I’m eating unhealthy, why not cut back on sugar (easier said than done). If I want to reduce stress, why not focus on prioritization, time management, prayer, and meditation. You get the picture, but many people don’t think about risks UNTIL well they hit them in the face. A few examples:
·         Boeing – Recent crashes that have taken hundreds of lives may possibly be linked to not updating airplane software and a lack of pilot training.
·         Equifax – How ironic is it that the company responsible for our credit scores, history, and maintaining so much of our personal data is hacked ( A close second: Ashley Madison’s website hack and they promote discreet relationships for married people)
·         Lululemon – How smart was it for an athleisure company executive to mock curvier women who wear their clothes when that is your primary customer base
·         Netflix – How about when you do nothing wrong like Netflix, but you have the new “risk” that Apple’s new TV streaming service is now dubbed the ‘Netflix killer’

Well I think you get the point…consider all risks and focus on the biggest ones…your company depends on it.

Expenses
This is no one’s favor subject so let’s make it fun by keeping it simple. There is a reason why so many businesses were started in garages…for the free rent J So stop trying to play the part until you actually have money rolling in. Can you work out of your home or garage and forgo that pricey co-working space.? Do you have expensive software when you have one customer? I saw a show where a small business was going to trade shows every year and losing money (why go?).  Don’t get me started on a company car!!. I constantly evaluate: Office Location vs Co-Working vs Home-based; Software vs Spreadsheet; and Personal Car vs Company Car. Grow your business and make sure that next expense helps increase your bottom-line in the future.   After two good years, I decided to pick up the fully loaded BMW X5 e40 company car (I still have my personal SUV because that's for personal use). In the words of J. Cole on 21 Savage’s “A Lot” à ‘How Many Faking They Streams…I Can See Behind the Smoke and Mirrors People ain’t as Big as They Seem”.   Don't fake your streams and get a car you and your business can't support. Stay humble and grow your business smartly. Peace

Pics of my Company Car (and yes I plug in to get roughly 600 mpg...call me cheap)

A Millie

is one of the hottest tracks out there right now, and for the hip hop impaired Lil Wayne is referencing his deep pockets on his latest album, The Carter 3. Then Jay Z came along and did a freestyle titled A Billie, so you do the math and guess how deep Jay Z's pockets might be. Now take A Billion and multiply it by 200!!! And whose pockets are those?

Yup, 200 Billion represents the estimated total that the could be used to "save" Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae...each possibly receiving 100. And who is responsible for those deep pockets none other than (unknowing) executives like you amd me! The Treasury department made the call this weekend to take over the two entities and bring a little some sense of reassurance that the end of the world is not approaching. And please believe me that as stock prices of these two entities headed for zero, the government could not let let them fail or else the American economy as you know it would have collapsed!

What does this mean...or more importantly what is the market telling you this means. Mr. Market right now is telling you by today's action that it is a solid move because he is hoping that this helps the mortgage rates to go down. If rates drop, consumers may be more likely to actually repay their loans, decrease the future foreclosures, and maybe even people from spur some consumers to think about taking out loans and buying houses. Who does this help, namely your banks and your and a long shot is the homebuilders.

So remember just awhile ago when I mentioned taking cover and waiting the storm out in safe investments like money markets and treasury investments, well now I am telling you to start reallocating your investments. I am leaning to Financials and Large Caps to benefit from this recent news. Why because as you start to calculate various probabilities, many analysts have reduced the likelihood of a catastrophic financial institution failing. Now don't get me wrong there will be banks that continue to fail but less likely it will be a BIG DOG.

How do I get my Urb on!

Now I am going to go out on a limb and say the whole world is catching up to my personal movement. If you need a constant reminder, add the Urbanomics RSS Feed to you webpage or email inbox. It's a gameplan that slowly being rolled out and I hope you are taking advantage of it as we learn together. Even Yung Joc is jumping on the bandwagon with his new album titled "Hustlenomics". Hmmm...sound familar, Hustlenomics and Urbanomics. Now if that's not some inspirational stuff then I don't know what is. Like I said the movement is deep and there will be different versions of my plan. Joc's Hustlenomics is taking what he is passionate about, the rap game, and hustling his way to the top to achieve financial empowerment (maybe other things but I doubt it). Urbanomics is a different variation and the focus is empowering ourselves to make our lives better. It's somewhat of a hustle that focuses on spiritual, financial, emotional, and physical strength.

After reading my blog posts, its pretty easy to tell which area is my strong suit. Now I am no Jim Cramer, Suze Orman, Warren Buffet, or even Yung Joc but I get my hustle on by keeping up with the world around me, especially the financial markets. And the focus on Urbanomics is not to dumb it down but to make it easy for the average person to follow whats going in a way that we all can understand. A little bit of hip hop, urban flair to the old world of Wall Street.

For example if your favorite musical artist was a stock who would you be buying, holding, or selling based on how well they have been performing. My buys list would be:
Akon, Kanye West, T-Pain, Chris Brown, & Lil Wayne
.
I would be holding 50 Cent, Jay Z, & Nas. And personally I would be selling Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, and the Shop Boyz (Party Like a Rockstar).
