YEAR IN REVIEW
2011, what a year!
Urbanomics welcomed 2011 but we had a slight grimace on our face the whole time. At the beginning of the year, we felt like it was going to be a tough road ahead
for the American economy because we were coming off of the effects of a huge financial
and economic crisis. There was not much
clarity so we played our card close to our chests and stayed with themes like:
DIVIDENDS, COMMODITIES, and VALUE. You’ll
notice I even began the year by selling a number of winners that we picked up
in 2010. It’s fun looking back and remembering all that we went through and
even smiling at some of the positions that were big winners and losers. Here were some of the themes that played out in 2011:
-
Closed positions on AIG: This was a great call
because we watched AIG tumble from $55, where we exited, to lows this year of
mid $20s.
-
Call of the YEAR: In response to a reader, we
analyzed Netflix and Applied Micro Devices and nailed it.
-
Stock PICK of the YEAR: International Coal (ICO)
had a great year and was up big over 258%
-
Worst PICK of the Year: St. Joe Company, easily
took this award. There was a compelling reason to stay away but I didn’t heed
the warning. Reminder, don’t bet against David Eihorn (famed hedge fund investor and poker player):
-
Best TREND identified this YEAR: We identified the momentum of money moving into Pharmaceutical stocks. This lead to a few premium alerts.
-
The art of the REVEAL: Read about a premium pick that
had a great year, AVEO Pharmaceuticals.
-
Finally, this year I tried to keep you on top of
the debt crisis, rising and falling prices in OIL, the continued rise of GOLD, crazy American Tax policy,
the troubles in Europe, and so many different topics that are relevant to what
you do every single day.
