IMANI | FAITH - A Roadmap for The New Year

Happy New Year to you all. On the 7th and final day of Kwanzaa, I want to remind you that you gotta have faith -- I won't tell you what in...but in something. A deeply rooted belief that will serve as your guide or as your beacon. Because one thing I do know is life has its moments that will truly battle test you. Imani is special to me because this is the name of my 3 month old daughter. And the meaning of her name is rooted in one of my core pillars -- Spirituality.

I was watching one of those morning shows and each year people are fed the same thing over and over. Get ready to make your list of resolutions or let's look back and see what I accomplished against last years list. I believe this exercise great for marketing, especially for gyms (Planet Fitness), exercise clothes and equipment (Peleton), and dating websites (Match) BUT it's mainly a waste of time. The first thing you learn in math, statistics which is recited in the financial stock market is: "Past Performance Does NOT Predict Future Results". So most of the short term goals that people make year to year are arbitrary IF they are not stitched together to support some type of higher plan or roadmap.  I wanted to pause and repeat this, setting goals are good. But you need a larger roadmap that says this is where I am today and this is where I want to be in 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 years. The interim, or short term goals, you set each year are good to write down but they should support this larger mission. This larger mission must be flexible and give you multiple paths to succeed or you will be backed into a corner by your own goal planning. Planning, road mapping, or charting your life like this take faith. As the great boxer Mike Tyson once said: "Everybody does have a plan until they get punched in the mouth. The real key to success is to have the right kind of plan to be able to move forward after they get hit."

It takes IMANI, a faithful commitment, because when adversity sets in how do you respond to that punch? Are you able to lessen the blow through advanced planning (i.e., preparation). This planning allows you to access the situation:
Do I find ways to lessen the blow? (block the punch)
Do I take a different path due to advanced planning? (change strategies)
Or do nothing? (this is my favorite strategy:  keep fighting, reassess later, get guidance)

How to Develop A Roadmap

Be Realistic - Most kids dream of being rich, but the stock market given you hundreds of years of free data. Most investments, NOT ALL, will return roughly 7-10% a year. Why not start will something based in data? (Example: At the end of every year, I compare ALL of my investments and how much they've returned against this benchmark). And if someone promises, guarantees you something higher, yes they are likely lying.

Be Flexible - I argue do NOT label me. So my goal is not to be a professional athlete (like I and every poor kid dreamed of in my day). My goal now is to learn the business of sports, while focusing on being an athlete. My goal now is to learn the music industry, while focusing on being an artist. I can videotape games (millionaire Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra's path to being a championship coach), I can be an agent, I can coach...and it just so happens I can ride my god given talents on the court or field for as long as I am allowed. Why, well the thing with very specific goals is if you fail...many lose their way or motivation or fight. If you have a multiple path roadmap --- my options are limitless. Need Proof: LeBron James had an HBO Documentary, Student Athlete, and he has brought a light to what I'm saying: Student Athlete reveals that of the 91,775 men who played NCAA basketball or football in the 2016-17 academic year, 303 were drafted by the NFL or NBA.

I can learn the business of music and while I look to drop my mixtape, I can learn about contractual rights, sample clearance, and how distribution work. I appreciate all my favorite musicians BUT my billionaire buddy Dr. Dre became super wealthy when he branded headphones...something we all had been using for years. He made them premium, exclusive, different and made more money than he ever did of the Chronic (no disrespect). Next, is my billionaire buddy, Daniel Ek.  He is the creator of Spotify and with a net worth of $4.5 Billion he makes more than any of my favorite musicians do and he can't rap?? But he set out to solve a problem. My generation was growing tired of radio and ads, we loved the ability to download free music (see Napster), but he recognized the industry and artists would jump at a new opportunity to distribute music over the internet (while not having it stolen for free). I am fan of royalties, but think of it like this --- the artist get's paid every time their song is played...Spotify and its shareholders get paid every time music is streamed.

Have Optionality - For me, I have faith in my probability/stat class in college. It was the best course I've ever taken in life. I understood how people made decisions, why they took the risks they did, and how people are often overconfident because they've miscalculated the situation. So you learn about what's called a decision tree.  As I flashback, my plan at 19 is still going strong:

Use the power of my degree and university to find decent paying job:
Outcome - I appreciate networks and humans wanting to belong to a tribe. I had an internship all 3 years in school until I graduated and most were tied to previous alums proud to recruit from their alma mater. Do NOT under estimate the power of networks getting you a job

Build personal wealth through an investment portfolio:
Outcome - At 19, I took out a loan from college, evaluated the rate and understood what the stock market normally returned (see above). To me it wasn't risky...most people didn't look at the data. It also helped that goal #1 was to find relevant work. My internships helped pay my school debts so my loans could be used to begin building my personal wealth. Do the math, give me a loan for 4% and if I make the standard 7-10%, I can afford to pay back the loan and that just $$ seeded my first portfolio with Datek, which was eventually bought out by TD Ameritrade. I even introduced a few of my roommates on to my theory back then.

Multiple Streams of Income (to reduce risks from systemic oppression):
Outcome - I grinded hard in Corporate America for many years. Have a very tiny pension to show for it. My first year they ended the program...just my luck. But it gave me the ability to build a massive 401K plan over the years, partially paid by my employer. So check the box for retirement goals. I already discussed my personal investment account above, so my income from work was split into a savings account (rainy day ONLY) and a personal use account for my weekends of BYOB restaurants, sports bar, and of course clubbing. I had dream of real estate but I had no experience in the industry so I held off. Accidentally my dream home became my first investment home. I bought during the lows of the 2008 crisis and thank goodness for the lessons I learned early. I disagree with most real estate professionals - like stocks the most important thing in real estate is Price, Price, Price (not location). My real estate gave me, equity, flexibility to rent. and is appreciating because of the price where I bought it. I had people in my ear for the previous 5 years saying buy a home, I thought prices were inflated. Glad I waited.

Have Imani - Faith that you will find a way, but it starts with the spiritual guidance I learned from my parents. The guidance from the teachings of African culture, such as Kwanzaa to respect my elders. This ability to treat others how I wanted to be treated showed up in my job reviews. It allowed me to study, build relationships, and execute even though I was surrounded by people who may not look like me. It gave us something in common once they opened their hearts. For moments they would forget and tell me things like you're different. I politely reminded them, I'm not --- you just have to open your heart to being around more people that don't look like you (like you've done for me and vice versa).

Higher
I am writing this post with a heavy heart but also with a continued sense of purpose.  The last few days and weeks have been filled with stories of growing concerns for the coronavirus, the tragic death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and 7 others in a helicopter crash, and the many tributes at this year's Grammys Award for those we have recently lost -- including Prince and the young brotha Nipsey Hussle.

If there has ever been any doubt as to why I write this blog I hope to clearly shine a light on that today.  My mission is to be free, have optionality, and create long lasting memories of my family, friends, and community that will be cherished for a life time.  With a laser focused work ethic like the legendary Kobe Bryant, I believe this is achievable by building a strong core.  A core built on pillars that will provide you and your future generations a feeling of social awareness and economic security.

After losing my remarkable father in 2019, I still wake up everyday with a continued sense of purpose of not letting his hard work go in vain.  How can I slack off when I have a Spiritual belief that we were put here for a reason (first pillar). If I told you of the obstacles my parents had to overcome just make it to America from Africa you would understand where my determination comes from. I think Nipsey Hussle said it best in 'Higher': "Pops turned 75, he proud what we done; In one generation he came from Africa young" (I changed the age from 60 to 75 in this lyric b/c we almost lost my father when he @ 74 when doctors told us to say goodbye -- but how grand his recovery was and magical seeing him celebrate his 75th)

He and my mom's instilled in us a Kobe Bryant like work ethic when it came to being Mentally strong, my second pillar. Kobe was the ultimate competitor -- he was often described as having ice in his veins.  I was mesmerized by Kobe because I had seen that look before...in my father when it came to education. Occasionally sharing experiences of being discriminated against (even after receiving his PhD magna cum laude, and being questioned in interviews as to how he did he do that; or being told a foreigner would never be a tenured professor), he told us the great equalizer in life is your mind. So it was no shock that one year, I received all 'A's' and stumbled with 1 'B' and I was punished more than my siblings who had NOT even met that mark.  It was a less than gentle reminder that we can't waste the moment, the opportunity to go higher..  John Legend from Higher: "Oh, Lord Can you feel it?  My shoes are scrapin' the sky   I'm so high  We keep goin' higher"

A strong physical core (3rd Pillar) is always a part of the competitive formula for taking your game higher. Besides the insurmountable chores we were given as kids, my father always found time for us to play and enjoy. The sprints in the yard, the dedication to build a basketball goal in the back yard, and the countless sporting events he drove me to was admirable considering I was a 3 sport athlete in my large high school (HS). In one fail swoop, my father taught me real strength and a need for balance when he took on my legendary HS basketball coach.  No one ever questioned the man who was recently inducted in the HS basketball Hall of Fame and has our HS gymnasium already named after him...and he's still alive. However, my African father did that one summer day.  Being a 3 sport athlete, I am constantly practicing and playing all year. Then in the summer, we were not so SUBTLY reminded of the importance of participating in the optional summer basketball league (where they tracked attendance).  I had never been so afraid in my life when my dad went up to the school and told my soon to be Hall of Fame coach, that his African son had reached 14 and had to have a job.  To me it was like watching David take on Goliath, but for the first time at a young age I saw a person of color showing me a path of optionality.  When your mind is free and strong, you don't buy into the mindset that sports is your only ticket in life. My father was reminding me of the need for balance and that I had responsibilities to my mission...my family and my future.  Strangely after that summer, I didn't experience a drop off (like one would expect)...I went to summer basketball when I could fit it in after work, I still outworked everyone by doing drills at home, and the next summer guess what: my coach offered me a summer job, imagine that he helped me reach my goals and his. Not only was I empowered with options in my life but I was stronger physically:
  • Graduated HS Male Athlete of the Year
  • Football All-State (Academic)
  • 3 Sport Athlete (Football, Basketball, Baseball)
  • Recruited to play at the college ranks
  • Honor Roll + National Honor Society
Finally, my fourth pillar is Financial. If you're not living in a bubble, we live in a capitalist society. I watched my parents struggle but scrape together the basic building blocks to provide a better life for themselves and their kids. By living within their means, they were able to pay off a very small home (3 bedroom, 1 bath home accommodating 6 people) by working multiple jobs.  They ushered 4 kids off to college and assisted immediate family who relocated from Africa. How does this make the financial pillar? By living within their means and focusing on education, they had 4 kids who paid all that hard work forward. We assisted my parents financially which allowed my mother to retire early, my parent to fix our small home (when needed), and to work a little less harder in their golden years. My future path to economic security is slightly different. Like Kobe, I've been taught to compete at the highest level and diversify my future so I'm less reliant on one boss, one company, or one downturn deciding my fate.  61% of Americans said they don't have $1000 dollars to cover an emergency situation. I am saddened by this stat.

This blog is a road map if you're believe in a path of social awareness and economic security. But please come with your mamba mentality! If my father could achieve a PhD, why should we stop learning. Currently I have a Bachelor's degree and two industry accredited certifications in my field which are like master's degrees because they require extensive testing and re-certifications (studying for my 3rd).  If my heroes can learn the stock market and write books, I can at least pick them up and read. Since I was 18, I made it a personal mission to learn the stock market (it looked important) and understand how to invest my income so that it could become Capital for me. Many of the people I know don't have any capital or investments that make them income outside of their core job. My mission is to ensure we are on a path that doesn't rely on a boss, a company, or a government to give us our freedom, our optionality, or determine when we can have time off to make memorable moments. Hopefully you agree and you keep reaching HIGHER...but don't you know that the devil is a liar  (Thanks to DJ Khaled, John Legend...and Rest In Peace Nipsey Hussle)

Rest in Peace Kobe Bryant

Hey HENRY - High Earner Not Yet Rich

Oh no, I’ve got to keep on moving.  So I was in my SUV listening to the Sirius XM service and this song came on by Puff and Mase.  A mood comes over you when you hear certain songs and this song made me feel some type of way.

First, it served as a reminder that we collectively are not getting any younger so don’t be held down by things in life.  Need proof, this great song was being played on a new station they were debuting: Hip-Hop from the 90s-2000s.  Ha! My favorite songs are now playing on an oldies channel.

Second, it’s a reminder to get your mind, health, wealth, and spiritual core in balance.  I stepped away from blogging for a while because life threw me an upper-cut harder than the ones thrown by Mike Tyson or Floyd Mayweather.  The loss of my father this year knocked me down but his well-lived life and legacy serves as a reminder for me and also hopefully for you to NOT BE HELD DOWN.

Third, live your life to the fullest and build a legacy you can be proud of.  Towards the end of college, I remember setting a goal with a few friends that we wanted to retire by the age of 35. I joke that I am Middle-America retired, I’ll explain shortly.  I recently learned that Wall Street likes to describe many of us as a “HENRY” – High Earning Not Rich Yet individuals. So being a HENRY and coming from a humble background has allowed me to evolve and change my target goal over time. While, I still worked towards the goal of retiring by 35, I realized that I didn’t live for myself anymore. I live to build, provide, and teach my family and friends about the importance of economic security and social awareness so that for generations to come we can overcome the obstacles that life will indefinitely throw at us.  Did I reach my goal?    I can definitively say that I have and now it’s time to lean in and assist you on your journey:

Goal 1: Be Middle America Retired – Remember, your family’s humble beginnings. Start modestly and set a reachable goal: For example, having enough income to buy a home in your parent’s neighborhood with the income from your investments but still having enough saving to never work again.

Goal 2: Debt Free – Eliminate debt from you and your family’s life. Just like Kanye, I’m tryna stay recession free…and the biggest pitfall people have during recessions is usually with debt. My buddy Warren Buffet is a fan of this rule too and DOES NOT like to buy stocks on margin (i.e., with debt).

Goal 3: Savings (6 - 12 months of Salary) – You need savings for life emergencies and they will come. Anticipate car break downs, hospital bills, house repairs, and a cushion against job loss.

Goal 4: Multiple Streams of Income – This is one of the most critical areas if you are a HENRY.  Be ready for what made you a HENRY. Capitalism!! Corporations unfortunately have one master…and that’s the stock market. So if they have to deliver a good quarter or more money back to shareholders…they will cut jobs and close plants and yes that includes the HENRY’s.  Don’t get it twisted, they call it “synergies”. When I buy my competitor’s company…I make money by eliminating all of the duplicate jobs. (What do you think will happen now that Charles Schwab just bought TD Ameritrade?  I heard estimates that up to 30% of the workforce could be cut.

Goal 5: A Balanced Core Gives You Freedom – Focus on family, go on trips, change jobs, start a business wisely, and get off of social media and actually build meaningful relationships. Why because you have planned, sacrificed and have flexibility to do it.

How do you get there, build up your pillars:

· Mental Pillar – Target mental growth through degrees, certifications, and self-learning. Find problems to solve, there is always a need for these items.
· Spiritual – Be grounded in something, when life rocks you…you need beliefs and a community to turn to; Volunteer and give back…trust this will make you feel good
· Financial – Economic security creates the ability to provide for you and your family. Find work that is fulfilling but more importantly solves a problem for others. If you had to advertise your personal skills would I hire you over the next person? Buy assets that appreciate, can be passed along, and that do NOT create additional debt. Diversify your income – do you have a retirement account, investment account, rental income, and a side hustle. If yes, Can’t Nobody Hold you down
· Health – Don’t let bad habits keep you down. A strong core should allow you to hopefully enjoy your hard work for years to come. But remember life is precious, so you must work hard to prolong it

Urbanomics Pillars - The Path Set For Stability and Financial Freedom

I have not written much lately because my focus continues to on working thoroughly on the Pillars I have written about so much over time. A quick recap of those principles that are grounded in the following Pillars:

Spiritual - a belief in something (for me that is God), love for your family, and a willingness to treat others with the respect and the equality they deserve

Financial - a belief that financial independence on your terms will give you a freedom from the shackles of debt, the privilege to work on your own terms and a future legacy to pass down to the generations of your family.

Mental (Education) - a belief in the importance education and the sharing of various human experiences to allow you to grow

Physical - a belief in the importance of enhancing your physical health to support a sound mind, body, and soul

I hope you find these simple pillars interesting but you can't stand tall with just one, while the rest languish.  Here is a quick example of why just having lots of money can't get you Financial Freedom. We all pick on star athletes and how much money they make. But they are also given a blessing at such a young age. Without the proper nurturing, it's easy to see how a mult-million dollar star can go broke fairly quickly. Forgetting about taxes, living for today but not for tomorrow, and making bad investments usually seem to be a common theme. Listen to this story and remember money is just relative, someone will ALWAYS have more of it than you will. But if you use it to free yourself or UNPLUG from what everyone always tells you that you should have or that you need...you'll find yourself the richest person in the world.
